The Doon itself is a much more impressive earthwork than it appears from a distance, with a series of ditches and banks to climb before you reach the top, from where there are no doubt some great views looking across the Nith Valley on a better day than I enjoyed.
Since the publication of the D&G guide much of the plantation has been cleared so the crags are more visible. I missed the turn to the left which goes up past a (disused?) caravan at the bottom of the old quarry and turned back when I saw I was going to meet the road. Overall a most enjoyable walk.
