These woods above Kirkcudbright repay a little bit of exploration, take the time to follow the signs for the red squirrel hide, or search for the grave of Billy Marshall in the cemetery as you pass.
Some of the paths in the woods are muddy but it is quite possible to find accessible routes, in particular from the upper car park to the red squirrel hide. The views over the town are somewhat limited by the growth of the woodland.
Rather than simply following the road down back in to town, you can take one of the paths on the right hand side of the road which leads you down through a small piece of woodland along the old mill race.
