Most of this circular walk from New Luce is along a rather bleak stretch of the Southern Upland Way, following an old track (perhaps a drover’s road). The route is quite wet in places, and when I walked it there were cattle with calves on the track (as I had my dog with me I gave them a wide berth and consequently didn’t manage to get to the chambered cairn as they were blocking my route).
As I was fortunate enough to be there on a sunny day I thoroughly enjoyed the walk, but I can’t say there would be much joy in it in wetter and colder conditions.
The distances given on the D&G leaflet are wrong – the walk is about 9.5 km not 3.5 as quoted. (Also, note that my tracked route includes a slight detour in search of a burnt mound shown on the OS map which I didn’t find)
