Annan, Waterfoot and Summergate Lane

A walk through the industrial heritage of Annan and along the Merse salt marsh on the edge of the Solway.

Despite having driven through and round Annan many times, I had no understanding of the scale of industry that took place in the town during the 19th Century. This walk takes you past the old harbour as well as many sadly crumbling remains of still impressive buildings. A number of information boards explain the town’s history.

We extended the walk to take in the remains of the Solway viaduct by continuing along the Merse and climbing the bank on to the dismantled railway track, before doubling back to rejoin the main route up Summergate Lane.
