The route given is just one of many options you can take around the Threave Estate and its connecting paths, which stretch from Castle Douglas to the Bridge of Dee. The walking is generally on the level with well maintained surfaces. The route includes a range of interest including four bird hides (one of which is on an island in the middle of the River Dee), the osprey viewing platform (they are generally in residence from May to September), Threave Castle and Threave Gardens, and part of the old railway line from Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright.
(I’m not sure where the stated distance of 12.5 km on the D&G guide comes from, when I walked it I took all of the options suggested and still came in under 9 km).
