After a stroll along the side of the Esk, the main interest on this walk consists of seeing the scale of the pheasant breeding operation for the Buccleugh Estates (unless cast iron bridges are your thing of course). There is then a walk back to town through some pleasant woodland, although the track was rather… Continue reading Duchess Bridge
Category: Easy
Much of the route is accessible but some short sections are a bit rougher underfoot (and may include some steps).
Becks and Gaskells
A short low level walk around the edges of Langholm. Don’t bother looking for the telephone box, it has long gone, but the track between the houses is easy to spot. When walking past the small holdings don’t turn off the track down the path at the first bench and turning place as I did,… Continue reading Becks and Gaskells
Garnets Walk
Ancient thorn bushes line the side of the old road into Port William providing cover for plants and wildlife. Looking over the top of the hedges (on a clear day) gives a good view along the coast, resulting in a short but interesting walk. I’m not sure if I managed to find the ‘interesting boulder’… Continue reading Garnets Walk
Monreith Estate
I was fortunate to arrive at this walk on a sunny spring morning at the start of May and as a result it was a real treat. The bluebells were as good as I have seen anywhere and the lack of foliage on the trees opened up the views across the loch, allowing the superb… Continue reading Monreith Estate
Dunskey Glen
For good or for ill, changes are afoot at Dunskey Estate. The gardens and tearoom no longer exist and many of the estate buildings are being changed into holiday rentals. I parked behind the stable block (beside the interesting and tricky maze) but it seems that the estate would now prefer you to park at… Continue reading Dunskey Glen
Archbank and Frenchland
Unless the weather has been very dry I would strongly recommend boots for this walk as some parts are quite muddy. However it is worth it for the good views of the hills and back over the town. I think part of the walk has been re-routed near to the farm at Alton, or perhaps… Continue reading Archbank and Frenchland
Waterside Walks
An easy walk along the bank of the River Annan, then back into Moffat town centre along the side of the Old Edinburgh Road. A short section of the return leg is on the road but traffic was very light when I visited. Don’t follow the instruction to climb the steps and drop down the… Continue reading Waterside Walks
Craigieburn Forest
A forest walk through the hills above Moffat on generally good paths/tracks. Note that there only seems to be the one route now waymarked – the longer option seems to have disappeared no doubt due to storm damage. When I walked it 19/3/24 How long it took me 1:10 How far I walked 4.5 km
Castle Hill and Watch Hill
Much of this walk is along roads, although they are either quiet country lanes or there is a footpath. The section of track down to Upper Loch was quite muddy the day I walked it so I would recommend boots. Dog walkers will be relieved to know that the stiles have been replaced with kissing… Continue reading Castle Hill and Watch Hill
Whitehills to Halleaths
This walk was surprisingly dry underfoot when I completed it after a series of wet days in March. It’s reasonably level and won’t detain you for too long – although you could choose to merge it with the Castle Loch walk. Dendrophiles will be delighted with the oak tree at the entrance to Halleaths Farm.… Continue reading Whitehills to Halleaths
