The route up the glen is straightforward to follow. Indeed I was enjoying it so much that I missed the path up the side valley to the spa itself and had to retrace my steps to the small cairn which should have alerted me to the fact that I was at the point to turn… Continue reading Hartfell Spa

Duchess Bridge
After a stroll along the side of the Esk, the main interest on this walk consists of seeing the scale of the pheasant breeding operation for the Buccleugh Estates (unless cast iron bridges are your thing of course). There is then a walk back to town through some pleasant woodland, although the track was rather… Continue reading Duchess Bridge
Becks and Gaskells
A short low level walk around the edges of Langholm. Don’t bother looking for the telephone box, it has long gone, but the track between the houses is easy to spot. When walking past the small holdings don’t turn off the track down the path at the first bench and turning place as I did,… Continue reading Becks and Gaskells
Byreburn Forest
An interesting walk with some industrial archaeology to discover, along with a waterfall and mixed forestry. The route is easy to follow and some of the paths have been recently maintained, with the result that even on the wettest of days most of the route was relatively dry. Note that there is a wheelchair accessible… Continue reading Byreburn Forest
Warb Law
Unfortunately I didn’t have the best of weather for this walk, and therefore can’t comment on the quality of the views from the top of Warb Law as I could barely see the top of the radio mast, never mind Criffel. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable walk even on very soggy ground – I would… Continue reading Warb Law
Archbank and Frenchland
Unless the weather has been very dry I would strongly recommend boots for this walk as some parts are quite muddy. However it is worth it for the good views of the hills and back over the town. I think part of the walk has been re-routed near to the farm at Alton, or perhaps… Continue reading Archbank and Frenchland
Waterside Walks
An easy walk along the bank of the River Annan, then back into Moffat town centre along the side of the Old Edinburgh Road. A short section of the return leg is on the road but traffic was very light when I visited. Don’t follow the instruction to climb the steps and drop down the… Continue reading Waterside Walks
Grey Mare’s Tail
A strenuous short ascent up the side of the waterfall leads to a gentler path to Loch Skeen. The path has been made up with stone blocks although these are breaking up in places Parking is at a National Trust for Scotland car park so charges apply. Even though we were there on a wet(ish)… Continue reading Grey Mare’s Tail
Craigieburn Forest
A forest walk through the hills above Moffat on generally good paths/tracks. Note that there only seems to be the one route now waymarked – the longer option seems to have disappeared no doubt due to storm damage. When I walked it 19/3/24 How long it took me 1:10 How far I walked 4.5 km
Castle Hill and Watch Hill
Much of this walk is along roads, although they are either quiet country lanes or there is a footpath. The section of track down to Upper Loch was quite muddy the day I walked it so I would recommend boots. Dog walkers will be relieved to know that the stiles have been replaced with kissing… Continue reading Castle Hill and Watch Hill
